Successful launch for Azerbaijani satellite Azerspace / Africasat-1a

2013 February 12

Azerbaijan proudly announced the triumphant launch of its first telecommunications satellite, Azerspace / Africasat-1a, from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guyana last February 7, 2013.

The Azerbaijani satellite is the first national telecom satellite in the South Caucasus region. In addition to delivering satellite communications services, Azerspace / Africasat-1a will also serve customers in the satellite broadband, broadcasting, and government sectors by offering satellite Internet, voice, data, and broadcasting services.

Azerspace / Africasat-1a is the end product of a $205 million agreement between Azerbaijani space agency Azercosmos and American satellite manufacturer Orbital Sciences Corporation. It is the first of several satellite projects aimed to enhance Azerbaijan’s standing in the IT and communication industry.

Orbital is currently performing in-orbit testing of Azerspace / Africasat-1a. Once testing is completed, it will turn over operational control of the satellite to Azercosmos.
